Cultural Arts & Innovation District – Design Guidelines

North Miami, FL

When the City of North Miami requested the creation of initiatives and design guidelines for its constrained North 7th Avenue traffic corridor, SRS and FIU pulled together a unique work/study student group of architects and landscape architects to refine a former master plan with detailed new zoning regulations and codes, density expansion, criteria for building height allowances, public amenities of parks, plazas, and landscaping, traffic mitigation, and safe pedestrian access.

Working closely in face-to-face and virtual meetings with the Florida Department of Transportation, neighbors, resident groups, business owners, City staff, and university faculty, SRS guided the process to cap dead end streets with parks and playgrounds, planned crosswalks at every third intersection, and new curbing and parking allotments while introducing newly permissible development for highrise residential units, hotels, and multi-story commercial projects.
